Academics

The LGBT Campus Center engages in the University of Wisconsin's philosophy that the student services mission of the University be integrated into the academic mission of the University in order to achieve a holistic approach to student retention and success. The LGBT Campus Center works to further both missions by providing support services to students and academic services to the University community.
One way the LGBT Campus Center provides academic services is through its status as a member of the UW Library System; in addition, the LGBT Campus Center maintains close contact and collaborative relationships with faculty and academic staff.
LGBT Campus Center Library
The LGBT Campus Center became a member of the University Library System during the Summer of 2006. Our collection of volumes are fully searchable and accessible in MadCat, the University's online catalogue. Holdings range from gay and lesbian fiction to up-to-date reference materials on LGBT studies, history, politics, medical issues, people of color and transgender resource materials. During the spring of 2008, the LGBT Campus Center launched its library website.
LGBT Studies Certificate
The LGBT Studies Certificate first enrolled students in the Fall of 2003 and has been the fastest growing Certificate program on campus ever since. The LGBT Studies Certificate is housed in the Department of Gender and Women's Studies.
LGBTQ Civil Rights Movement Course
The LGBTQ Civil Rights Movement 1960 - 1990: Exploring History and
Current Consequences explored the political, social, and cultural history of the mid-twentieth century U.S. LGBTQ movement. This
historical exploration provided a basis for consideration of issues and themes that extend to contemporary LGBTQ life in the U.S. and
beyond.
Students from UW Madison, who participated in this course, traveled to Detroit, Washington D.C., and New York City on a ten-day exploration of
historical sites. In these cities, students met with living leaders of the then nascent LGBTQ Civil Rights Movement and visit sites related to
the movement. Events and organizations were explored from the 1960's, 1970's, 1980's and today.
