Trans Student Health Information

The Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) is available to all UW students (domestic and international) and Certain International Scholars not registered for any university classes. SHIP covers some medical and counseling care for transgender-identified students.

Coverage includes any non-surgical care, including medication, mental health services, office visits and other procedures. The plan also includes parity for mental health care, which means there is no cap limiting mental health services for students receiving care outside of UHS. In other words:

SHIP does NOT currently include: expenses incurred for, or related to, sex change surgery or to any surgical treatment of gender identity disorders. SHIP DOES include: charges incurred for non-surgical therapy (hormone therapy and counseling) provided for treatment of gender identity disorders.
