LGBTQ Archives Project
The LGBTQ Archive contains oral histories, personal papers, photographs, ephemera and organizational records related to LGBTQ life in Madison and Dane County from the 1940s to today. Beginning with only a few oral histories, the collection has grown to include an increasingly diverse array of materials and voices from the LGBTQ community.
This is a growing collection, focused on offering the most accurate reflection of the community possible. To add your voice, please contact the UW-Madison Archives at 608 262-5629 or uwarchiv@library.wisc.edu.
LGBT Oral History Project
This project from UW-Madison’s Oral History Program consists of people who have expressed interest in gathering, preserving, and providing access to the stories, memories, and documents of Madison’s LGBT community. Browse interviews, movie clips, and more at the link!

LGBT Civil Rights Movement
This course offered in 2008 explored the political, social, and cultural history of the mid-twentieth century U.S. LGBTQ movement.
Students traveled to Detroit, Washington D.C., and New York City on a ten-day exploration of historical sites. There, they met with living leaders of the LGBTQ Civil Rights Movement, visited organizations and conducted interviews.

LGBTQ+ Studies Certificate
The LGBTQ+ Studies Certificate Program, administered by the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies, is a campus-wide program open to students in any major. Courses that count toward this interdisciplinary certificate come from a wide range of fields including literature, history, sociology, medical history, as well as from gender and women’s studies.
The program coordinator is Dr. Finn Enke, a strong partner of the GSCC.

UW Libraries Gender & Sexuality Databases
Databases available through UW-Madison Libraries include LGBT Life with Full Text, Gender Watch and Women’s Studies International.
LGBTQ resource library
The Gender and Sexuality Campus Center Library is part of the UW Libraries system. Browse the library in the Center or online and use your WiscCard to check out books and DVDs about LGBTQ identity, life, and health. You’ll find:
- Queer fiction, biography, memoir, and graphic novels
- LGBTQ studies and gender studies
- Sections on bisexuality, religion, international perspectives, history, and education
- Resource binders on disability & queerness, non-monogamy, non-monosexuality, and asexuality
- DVDs (popular film, TV series, and documentaries)
- Board games

You can find our books and DVDs using the the UW Libraries online catalog. Follow these steps:
- Go to “Advanced Search” under the search bar on the main Libraries webpage.
- Click on “Library” under “Limits” on the right side of the Advanced Search page.
- Expand the + by UW Madison.
- Expand the + by LGBT Campus Center Library (this was our old name).
- Choose whether to search our books by clicking “Stacks,” our DVDs by clicking “Video Collection,” or all of our materials by clicking “All Locations.”
- Describe what you’re looking for in the search fields (Keywords, Title, Authors …) and click “Search.”
The CC’s Resource Binders provide intro to in depth education on a variety of topics and identities within LGBTQ+ communities and include overviews/general information, personal narratives, allyship action tips, academic articles, affiliated organizations’ information, and other resources. They do not include all of the information on their topics and should not be considered the definitive word, rather they a good starting point for exploration and education.
Asexuality
The asexuality binder includes an overview of identities on the asexual spectrum, including asexuality, demisexuality, aromanticism, gray-a, and more. There is information about AVEN (Asexuality Visibility and Education Network) along with other resources and perspectives.
The purpose of the disability & queerness binder is to educate LGBTQ+ people and their allies of all abilities on how the queer community intersects with disability. Included in this binder is information on a range of experiences of physical, sensory, and mental impairments, and information on how to practice allyship to these communities. Also, refer to the Queer Disability Resource Guide.
Non-Monogamy
The non-monogamy binder includes information on a variety of different types of non-monogamy, along with suggested sources and allyship tips.
Non-Monosexuality [bisexuality, pansexuality, fluid & similar]
The non-monosexuality Binder provides information on a variety of non-monosexual identities including bisexuality, pansexuality, fluid sexuality, queer identity, and others. Included in the binder are allyship tips, info on non-monosexual organizations, media recommendations, scholarly articles, and more.

We add new items to our collection every year based on national lists, current events, and your input.

Our shelves have easy-to-browse categories, and books are arranged by Library of Congress numbers so they’re easy to find.
Scholarships
Astraea Lesbian Foundation
Astraea’s International Fund supports groups led by LGBTQI communities working for progressive social change, addressing oppression based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity and expression, and advancing work for racial, economic and gender justice.
LEAGUE Foundation
This program is open to graduating high school seniors who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender.
Live Out Loud
Every year, Live Out Loud rewards hardworking LGBTQ graduating seniors with scholarships that help make their college dreams a reality.
PFLAG National
Students are eligible to receive scholarships from both their local chapter and the national PFLAG office.
Point Foundation
Empowers promising LGBTQ students to achieve their full academic and leadership potential to make a significant impact on society. In addition to financial support, Point Foundation matches each scholar with a mentor.
Human Rights Campaign database
The HRC hosts a database of LGBTQ scholarship opportunities. Sort by Wisconsin or other states.
GLBT Alumni Council
The GLBT Alumni Council, in association with the GSCC, offers an annual cluster of scholarships to LGBTQ+ and similarly-identified students who have shown potential and sustainable leadership and impact on the LGBTQ community at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The common application for these scholarships will be open in March 2024. Keep an eye on our newsletter and Instagram for updates!
